Why I Chose Landscape
I fought with the format of this book for a long time. Probably too long. Definitely too long, if you ask my partner.
Portrait feels serious and professional. Square feels trendy and chic. Landscape feels like your uncle who wears crocs and socks.
But when I laid the images out it was clear. Just like Uncle Gil’s feet, they needed to breathe.
The Butterfly Club wasn’t a place you experience in neat little frames - it was broad little stages, low ceilings, walls overstuffed to bursting with kitsch, audiences pressed shoulder to shoulder.
Landscape held that feeling better. It gave the performers room to move and the audience space to exist in the same frame.
Once I saw it that way, I couldn’t unsee it. Landscape wasn’t just a fashion choice; it was the only way to hold the room as it really was.
I still don’t approve of crocs though. Soz Uncle Gil.
