Project Statement

BUTT CLUB TEXT 3 copy-17 (5)_edited.png

Curtain Call is a photographic elegy to a place built on sequins, sweat, queer joy, and the fragile magic of live performance.

The project started quietly under a different title. I wanted to capture the life behind the curtain; the nerves, the rituals, the in-between moments that make a show possible.

And then just as I finished the final hour of my final shoot, ready to begin editing and curating, I was informed The Butterfly Club was closing. No warning. No public announcement. No fanfare. In the space of Tomorrow it would be gone.

So I returned with my camera one final time. What I captured sits somewhere between documentary and memory. The spark. The stubborn joy. All the messy, beautiful pieces of what made this place matter; right at the moment it slipped between applause and  mourning.

Losing The Butterfly Club is not just devastating; It is a cultural rupture. For over two decades, it was more than just a kitschy little stage. It was a home. A haven. A cathedral. A conspiracy. A bordello. An incubator for an entire generation of celebrity, artistry, and obscurity. Its closure is an inflection point in the delicate ecosystems of artistic expression, queerness and community that allowed this kind of space to ever exist at all.

What began as a love letter became an act of witness. Of grief. Of defiance.

These photos are for the performers, the staff, the audience, the ghosts of shows past, the glitter and the legacy that outlives the building.
