A Chance Connection with Strewth

I reached out to Strewth on the morning of their opening night, not expecting a reply. But to my surprise, they got back to me quickly, excited by the idea of working together. They hadn’t booked a photographer, and the timing just clicked.

That same day, I presented my uni project proposal. The response was encouraging, and it helped ground me in the decision to keep documenting the artists connected to The Butterfly Club.

Photographing Strewth felt easy and collaborative. We were both a little nervous, but there was trust straight away. I’m still figuring out my settings on the fly, but I know that’s part of the process with live performance.

After the show, I ended up on the roof with a friend I didn’t expect to see, who, it turns out, also knew Strewth. It was one of those lovely, unexpected moments that reminded me how interconnected this creative world really is.

It wasn’t a perfect night, but it didn’t need to be. It was real, generous, and full of the kind of connection I’m chasing with this project.

Reflection

  • What worked: Reaching out directly, even at the last minute, created an authentic and easy collaboration.

  • What didn’t: I was still unsure about my technical settings and found myself reacting rather than anticipating.

  • What’s next: I’ll keep refining my settings for fast-paced environments, and continue initiating connections early to build trust before I arrive.
